  • - WAD was first proposed by Heinrich Zimmermann, a German cynologist and animal welfare advocate. It was initially observed on 24th March 1925 in Berlin, Germany, laying the foundation for a global animal welfare movement.
  • - October 4 was officially designated as World Animal Day in 1931 at the Florence Congress in Florence, Italy. Since 2003, the UK-based Naturewatch Foundation has coordinated global observances of the day.
