  • - The International Day of Democracy was established by the United Nations (UN) in response to a request from the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), with the UN General Assembly (UNGA) adopting resolution A/RES/62/7 on 8 November 2007. The day was first observed globally on 15 September 2008.
  • - The choice of 15 September is significant as it marks the anniversary of the Universal Declaration on Democracy, adopted by IPU member parliaments during the 161st session held in Cairo, Egypt, on 15 September 1997.
