In September 2025, Mohamed Irfaan Ali, current President of Guyana and member of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP), was re-elected as the President of Guyana for a second 5-year term after winning the general election held on September 1, 2025.

  • - The People’s Progressive Party (PPP) won 36 out of 65 National Assembly seats, giving Mohamed Irfaan Ali a renewed mandate to govern the country. His re-election ensures continuity in the nation’s policies and governance framework.
  • - The We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) party, led by Azruddin Mohamed, recently became the second-largest party with 16 seats, surpassing the traditional opposition, A Partnership for National Unity (APNU), which secured 12 seats. This reflects a changing political landscape in Guyana.
  • - Mohamed Irfaan Ali is now serving his second term as President, each spanning 5 years. He has been in office since August 2020, making him the 10th President of Guyana. His recent re-election continues his leadership for the period 2025–2030.

💡 Other Important Facts:

  • (i) Ali’s political career began in 2006 as a Member of Parliament (MP). He has previously served as the Minister of Housing and Water (2009–2015) and as Minister of Tourism Industry and Commerce. He has also chaired the Public Accounts Committee and co-chaired the Economic Services Committee in the National Assembly.
  • (ii) In addition to his political roles, Mohamed Irfaan Ali has worked as Project Manager for the Caribbean Bank’s Development Project Implementation Unit in the Ministry of Finance and as Senior Planner in the State Planning Secretariat.
  • (iii) Mohamed Irfaan Ali is the first Muslim President of Guyana and the second Muslim head of state in the Americas, following Noor Hassanali of Trinidad and Tobago. In 2023, he was honoured with the Pravas Bharatiya Samman, India’s highest award for individuals of Indian origin, recognising his contributions to governance and public service.
