Department of Agriculture Revises Guidelines for ‘Per Drop More Crop’ Scheme to Promote Efficient Water Use.

National | Dated: 21 Oct 2025

In October 2025, the Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare (DoAFW), Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare (MoAFW), revised the guidelines for the ‘Per Drop More Crop’ (PDMC) scheme to promote efficient water use and raise farmers’ income. The revision provides more flexibility for States and Union Territories (UTs) to implement micro-level water storage and conservation projects.

🎯 Key Highlights:

  • - States and UTs can now plan local water management works such as diggi construction and water harvesting systems based on local requirements. Previously, funding was capped at 20% for states and UTs and 40% for Northeastern states, Himalayan states, Jammu & Kashmir (J&K), and Ladakh. The revised guidelines remove these limits.
  • - The systems developed under the scheme can be used by individual farmers as well as communities, ensuring sustainable water availability for micro-irrigation.
  • - The PDMC scheme is part of the Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana (PMKSY), a Centrally Sponsored Scheme (CSS) launched on July 1, 2015, aimed at promoting efficient water use in agriculture through micro-irrigation, following the principle of “More Crop per Drop.”

💡 Other Important Facts:

  • (i) The scheme aims to promote micro-irrigation technologies, encourage precision farming, enhance productivity and income, promote water conservation, and support diversification.
  • (ii) PDMC covers installation of drip and sprinkler systems, with deployment patterns for states with high or low micro-irrigation penetration, including Northeastern and Himalayan states. States prepare Annual Action Plans (AAPs) under District Irrigation Plan and State Irrigation Plan frameworks.
  • (iii) The scheme emphasizes convergence with other programs, adoption of technology, geo-tagging of projects, monitoring, and Quality Control (QC) measures.
