In October 2025, the Government of India (GoI) launched the Rs 600 crore ‘Kapas Kranti Mission’ to enhance cotton productivity in regions like Akola (Maharashtra) and Telangana, focusing on high-yield, long-staple cotton through scientific practices such as High-Density Planting (HDP).

  • - The initiative was announced by Union Minister G. Kishan Reddy, Ministry of Coal and Ministry of Mines (MoM), during a press conference in Hyderabad, Telangana.
  • - Union Minister G. Kishan Reddy announced that the Cotton Corporation of India (CCI) will begin cotton procurement between October 21–24, 2025, across 122 procurement centres in Telangana, ensuring direct and transparent purchases from farmers.
  • - To safeguard farmers’ interests, the GoI has formed district-level committees led by District Collectors (DCs), including officials, police, and farmer representatives, to address grievances and prevent exploitation during procurement.

💡 Other Important Facts:

  • (i) A new ‘Kapas Kisan App’ will be launched to help farmers locate nearby procurement centres, book selling slots, and eliminate middlemen, thereby promoting digital transparency in cotton trade operations.
  • (ii) Cotton procurement through CCI has seen a major rise from 173 lakh bales worth Rs 24,825 crore (2004–14) to 473 lakh bales worth Rs 1.37 lakh crore (2014–24), showcasing the government’s strong support to cotton farmers in the last decade.
  • (iii) The Minimum Support Price (MSP) for cotton has doubled in ten years—from Rs 4,050 per quintal (2014) to Rs 8,110 per quintal (2024). The GoI spent Rs 58,000 crore in Telangana and Rs 8,000 crore in Andhra Pradesh (AP) towards cotton procurement during this period.
