In October 2025, the Indian Coast Guard Ship (ICGS) Akshar, the 2nd of the 8th Adamya-class Fast Patrol Vessels (FPVs), was commissioned at Karaikal in the Union Territory of Puducherry. The commissioning ceremony was conducted by Dipti Mohil Chawla, Additional Secretary of Indian Defence Accounts Service (IDAS), under the Ministry of Defence (MoD), in the presence of senior Coast Guard and Defence officials.

🎯 Key Highlights:

  • - ICGS Akshar was designed and developed indigenously by Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) with over 60% local content, supporting India’s ‘Make in India’ initiative and strengthening maritime capabilities. The 51-meter-long ship has been built for safe, secure, and clean seas.
  • - The ship weighs nearly 320 tonnes and is powered by twin 3,000 KW diesel engines, enabling a maximum speed of 27 knots and an endurance of 1,500 nautical miles. It is equipped with Controllable Pitch Propellers (CPP) and gearboxes for enhanced maneuverability and operational flexibility.
  • - ICGS Akshar features an Integrated Bridge System (IBS), an Integrated Platform Management System (IPMS), and an Automated Power Management System (APMS), enhancing operational efficiency, mission readiness, and safety during maritime operations.

  • (i) The vessel’s weaponry includes a 30 mm CRN-91 gun and two 12.7 mm Stabilized Remote-Controlled Guns (SRCGs) with advanced fire-control systems, ensuring effective coastal security and law enforcement capabilities.
  • (ii) ICGS Akshar is based at Karaikal under the administrative and operational control of the Commander Coast Guard Region (East), Chennai, Tamil Nadu. It is commanded by Commandant (JG) Subhendu Chakraborty, with a team of 5 officers and 33 personnel.
  • (iii) The ship will undertake maritime surveillance, coastal security, and law enforcement operations, symbolizing the Indian Coast Guard’s steadfast resolve to ensure safe, secure, and clean seas.
