Cochin Shipyard Signs MoU with HD Korea Shipbuilding for Strategic Shipbuilding Collaboration.

In September 2025, Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with South Korea’s HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (HD KSOE) to strengthen India’s shipbuilding sector. The MoU was exchanged at the Samudra se Samriddhi – Transforming India’s Maritime Sector event in Bhavnagar, Gujarat, in the presence of Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and Union Minister of State Shantanu Thakur.

🎯 Key Highlights:

  • - The collaboration combines CSL’s domestic expertise with HD KSOE’s advanced global shipbuilding technology. This long-term association is expected to boost India’s shipbuilding competitiveness, enabling the country to develop world-class vessels while strengthening maritime self-reliance.
  • - CSL’s 310-metre dry dock will be utilized to construct large commercial vessels such as Suezmax tankers, container ships, and Capesize bulk carriers. The dock will support a production capacity of up to six such vessels annually, positioning CSL as a major global shipbuilding hub.

💡 Other Important Facts:

  • (i) A state-of-the-art Block Fabrication Facility is planned in Kochi, Kerala, covering approximately 80 acres. With an annual fabrication capacity of 1,20,000 metric tonnes (MT), the project involves an investment of about ₹3,700 crore, significantly scaling up CSL’s infrastructure.
  • (ii) The MoU also includes the development of a greenfield shipyard in Tamil Nadu, with an estimated investment of ₹15,000 crore. This facility is expected to handle advanced and next-generation shipbuilding requirements, enhancing India’s maritime industrial ecosystem.
  • (iii) The collaboration supports Maritime India Vision (MIV) 2030 and Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision (MAKV) 2047, government blueprints for transforming India into a global shipbuilding and maritime logistics hub.
