India and Canada have decided to resume high-level negotiations and broaden cooperation across multiple strategic domains, signaling a reset in bilateral relations. The move comes after diplomatic tensions and marks renewed commitment on both sides to strengthen trade, security, and shared values.

  • - Officials from India and Canada, meeting in pre-Foreign Office consultations, have agreed to restart bilateral dialogue mechanisms focusing on trade, defence, and the critical minerals sector. These consultations are intended to reactivate cooperation in areas including energy, civil nuclear, science & technology, agriculture, law enforcement, and space.
  • - A prior turning point was the meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney at the G7 Summit in Kananaskis (June 2025).
  • - They agreed to reinstate High Commissioners in each other’s capitals and resume stalled trade negotiations, including the Early Progress Trade Agreement (EPTA), as a stepping stone toward a more comprehensive trade pact (CEPA).

  • (i) Trade between India and Canada continued to grow despite political tensions. In Fiscal Year 2024-25, India’s exports to Canada rose by approximately 9.8%, reaching about USD 4.2 billion, while imports from Canada declined by roughly 2–2.3%, amounting to about USD 4.4 billion.
  • (ii) The renewed cooperation extends beyond trade. Both countries are exploring collaboration in clean energy, digital transformation, artificial intelligence (AI), supply chain resilience, and growth sectors like higher education and mobility of skilled professionals and students.
