World Patient Safety Day 2025 Observed Globally on 17th September.

The World Health Organization (WHO) observed World Patient Safety Day (WPSD) 2025 on September 17 to raise awareness about patient safety and encourage global actions for safer healthcare practices. The 2025 theme was “Safe care for every newborn and every child” with the slogan “Patient safety from the start!”.

🎯 Key Highlights:

  • - The 2025 theme highlights the vulnerability of children (0–9 years) to unsafe care and emphasizes the need for safe, tailored healthcare matching their growth and unique needs. The official slogan was “Patient safety from the start!”.
  • - WPSD was established in 2019 by the 72nd World Health Assembly (WHA) through Resolution WHA 72.6 “Global action on patient safety”. The first observance took place on 17 September 2019.
  • - A Decade of Patient Safety (2021–2030): In 2020, WHO launched a global initiative to strengthen patient safety efforts worldwide. It was officially adopted at the WHA on 28 May 2021 as a 10-year strategic roadmap for safer healthcare systems.

  • (i) Research indicates up to 97% of adverse events in neonatal care are preventable. Studies show adverse events occur in 91.6% of pediatric intensive care cases and up to 53.8% in general care settings. Medication-related issues are the leading cause of preventable harm, linked to nearly 50% of all avoidable medical errors.
  • (ii) In April 2024, WHO launched the Patient Safety Rights Charter at the 6th Global Ministerial Summit in Chile, offering tools to build patient-centered systems, safeguard patients’ rights, and minimize medical errors.
  • (iii) On World Patient Safety Day 2025, India marked the occasion with conferences and awareness drives. The NABH (National Accreditation Board for Hospitals & Healthcare Providers) organized the National Patient Safety Conference (NPSC 2025) in New Delhi under the Quality Council of India (QCI), advancing patient-centered safety culture.
