India & Sri Lanka Sign MoU to Establish Emergency Care Unit at Mannar District General Hospital.

On September 9, 2025, India and Sri Lanka signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to construct a new Accident and Emergency (A&E) Unit at the District General Hospital in Mannar, Sri Lanka, strengthening bilateral cooperation in healthcare infrastructure.

  • - The MoU was signed by Santosh Jha, High Commissioner of India to Sri Lanka, and Dr. Anil Jasinghe, Secretary, Ministry of Health and Mass Media, Sri Lanka, in the presence of senior officials.
  • - The upcoming two-storey A&E Unit will provide advanced trauma and emergency care facilities, including intensive critical care, rapid medical response, and specialized treatment for accident and disaster victims.

  • (i) India will support the project with a grant of 600 million Sri Lankan rupees (approximately ₹15.5 crore), underlining its continued commitment to strengthening healthcare capacity in Sri Lanka.
  • (ii) The facility at Mannar District General Hospital will serve as a major referral and emergency care hub for the Northern Province of Sri Lanka, benefitting both local communities and cross-border patients.
  • (iii) The project is part of India’s broader development partnership with Sri Lanka, which has already supported more than 70 healthcare projects across the island nation, reflecting strong bilateral ties in public health.
