EIL Completes India’s First Bamboo-based Bio-Refinery at Numaligarh, Assam.

In September 2025, Engineers India Limited (EIL), a ‘Navratna’ Central Public Sector Enterprise (CPSE) under the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MoPNG), completed the mechanical work for India’s first bamboo-based bio-refinery at Numaligarh, Assam, which will be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 14, 2025.

  • - The project is being executed for Assam Bio Ethanol Private Limited (ABEPL), marking a major milestone in India’s renewable energy and green fuel initiatives.
  • - The refinery uses advanced technology provided by Chempolis Oy of Finland, ensuring high efficiency in converting bamboo feedstock into biofuels and chemicals.
  • - Designed annual production capacity includes 49,000 Tonnes Per Annum (TPA) of bioethanol, 11,000 TPA of acetic acid, and 19,000 TPA of furfural, making it a first-of-its-kind facility in the country.

💡 Other Important Facts:

  • (i) EIL executed the project in Engineering, Procurement, and Construction Management (EPCM) mode, directly scaling up from the demonstration stage to a full-fledged commercial bio-refinery.
  • (ii) The initiative aligns with India’s Ethanol Blending Programme (EBP) and supports the Government of India’s broader goals of energy security and achieving Net-Zero emissions by 2070.
