The United Nations (UN) annually observes the International Day for the Fight Against Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated (IUU) Fishing on 5 June, drawing global attention to the critical challenges posed by IUU fishing that jeopardize sustainable fisheries.

  • - On 5 June 2025, the world will mark the 8th edition of this observance, organized by the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

💡 Other Important Facts:

  • (i) In December 2017, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) adopted resolution A/RES/72/72, formally designating 5 June as the International Day for the Fight Against IUU Fishing.
  • (ii) That same resolution also declared 2022 as the International Year of Artisanal Fisheries and Aquaculture, highlighting the efforts of small-scale fishers who account for 90% of the global fisheries workforce.
  • (iii) The inaugural celebration of the International Day for the Fight Against IUU Fishing took place on 5 June 2018.
