The United Nations (UN) observes World Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) Day every year on December 1 to raise awareness about Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and AIDS, and to encourage global unity in the fight against the disease.

  • (ii) The first World AIDS Day was observed on December 1, 1988.
  • (iii) Since 1992, the National AIDS Control Organization (NACO), under the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare (MoHFW), Government of India (GoI), has been commemorating World AIDS Day every year on December 1.
