Union Minister Bhupender Yadav Releases 18th Edition of India State of Forest Report 2023.

On December 21, 2024, Union Minister Bhupender Yadav, Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC), unveiled the 18th edition of the India State of Forest Report (ISFR 2023), Volume I and II, at the Forest Research Institute (FRI) in Dehradun, Uttarakhand.

  • - According to the report, India's total forest and tree cover in 2023 is 827,357 square kilometers (sq km), accounting for approximately 25% of the country's geographical area.
  • - This reflects a net increase of 1,445 sq km since 2021, with forest cover alone registering a growth of 156 sq km.
  • - The ISFR report, which is published biennially, was first introduced in 1987 by the Forest Survey of India (FSI).

💡 Other Important Facts:

  • (i) Total forest and tree cover in 2023 is 827,356.95 sq km (25.17% of India’s area), with forest cover at 715,342.61 sq km (21.76%) and tree cover at 112,014.34 sq km (3.41%).
  • (ii) Madhya Pradesh (77,073 sq km) leads, followed by Arunachal Pradesh (65,882 sq km) and Chhattisgarh (55,812 sq km).
  • (iii) Established in 1981, headquartered in Dehradun, Uttarakhand, and led by Director General Anoop Singh.
